Staying off the Las Vegas Strip can be worthwhile when the hotel fits your itinerary and the full-stay saving exceeds the added travel cost. It is not automatically cheaper, quieter or more convenient. Compare two actual lodging totals and the journeys you would make from each.
“Off-Strip” includes very different destinations: a resort near the Strip, a downtown hotel and a more distant property do not create the same trip. Start with the exact address and your planned activities.
Compare the location with your plans

Calculate the whole-stay difference
Get quotes for the same dates, occupancy, bed requirements and cancellation conditions. Include mandatory lodging charges and tax. Then add parking, transport and any other costs that change because of the location.
Illustration, not hotel or transport quotes: suppose a four-night Strip booking totals $800 and an off-Strip alternative totals $620 for lodging. The initial difference is $180. Now test the travel plan:

The $40 is an assumed total per round trip, not each way. Use current estimates for your routes and times. Count mid-afternoon returns to the room as well as evening outings; returning to change before a show can add another journey.
If you will have a car
Include rental cost, fuel and parking at your destinations. Free parking at the hotel does not make parking elsewhere free. If you would rent a car only because of the off-Strip location, include that extra cost in the comparison.
Check where you will actually park and enter each resort. A road distance does not establish the time from your room to a theater seat or restaurant table. Allow for garages, internal walks and any event-related restrictions.
If you will use rideshare, taxis or transit
Price the journeys you would really take. Our Vegas rideshare and taxi guide explains how to compare live quotes with the current airport taxi structure. Do not turn an old fare anecdote into a guaranteed transport budget.
For transit, consult RTC’s current routes and schedules. Check stops, operating times, transfers and the walk at both ends. An off-Strip hotel is not automatically convenient for a particular transit service.
If walking is part of the plan, inspect the actual pedestrian route and crossings. Decide whether the distance, weather and late return suit your group. Do not assume two properties with nearby map markers have a short entrance-to-entrance walk.
When off-Strip makes more sense
- Your main activities are at that resort or in its surrounding area.
- A downtown stay puts the places you want to visit closer together.
- The accommodation has a feature you need and its complete cost fits the budget.
- The remaining saving is meaningful after accounting for travel and time.
A Strip hotel can be the better fit when most bookings are there and repeated return journeys would add expense or inconvenience. Compare the exact locations in our first-time hotel guide.
Check before reserving
Confirm the room category, age restrictions, pool access, fees and cancellation deadline. Ask about a particular noise or room-location concern; an off-Strip address does not guarantee a quiet room or better service. Keep lodging and transport together in your overall trip budget.
