Before your first Las Vegas slot spin, identify the value of one credit, the total cost of the next paid spin and the game’s payout rules. A penny denomination does not necessarily mean a one-cent wager. If the screen is unclear, ask casino staff to explain it before you commit any money.

Read these four amounts first
| Display | Question to answer | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Denomination | What is one credit worth? | One credit = $0.01 |
| Credit balance | How much money does this balance represent? | 2,000 credits = $20 |
| Total bet | What will the next paid spin cost? | 100 credits = $1 |
| Award | How much was credited back, compared with the wager? | 60 credits = $0.60 |
At those example settings, a $1 wager followed by a $0.60 award leaves you $0.40 down on that spin. The displayed award is not automatically a profit. Recheck the dollar amount after changing denomination, credits or other wager controls.
Open the game information before choosing a bet
MGM Resorts’ GameSense slots guide explains credits, paytables and the need to understand the cost per spin. Use the machine’s help or information controls to check:
- The total paid-spin wager and whether lines or other winning patterns are fixed or selectable.
- What combinations qualify for awards and which credit or cash units the paytable uses.
- Any separate wager conditions for bonus features or jackpots, rather than assuming every bet qualifies.
- How to end play and redeem the remaining balance; ask staff about an unfamiliar cash-out procedure.
Some games bundle their winning patterns into preset bet levels. Do not assume that every machine lets you select individual lines. Our single-line versus multiline comparison shows how to compare wager formats and costs.
Maximum bet is not a beginner’s default
Choose only a wager that fits the amount you are prepared to lose. A feature’s higher qualifying bet is a cost to evaluate, not an instruction to increase your stake. You can skip the game if its minimum cost or rules do not suit you. Increasing your wager after losses also increases the dollars at risk.
A machine does not become due after a losing streak
GameSense’s explanation of slot randomness describes ordinary random spins as unpredictable and independent of previous results. A recent jackpot, an empty seat or an aisle position does not establish that the next spin will pay. For a game with persistent features, read its specific rules rather than guessing what an on-screen meter means.
A payback percentage is also different from your chance of winning the next spin. Read what slot RTP does and does not mean before relying on a percentage.
Keep the trip budget separate
Set a time limit and a money limit before play, with hotel, food and transport money outside it. Our beginner gambling-budget guide includes a $0 option. No wager size guarantees a particular playing time, and a loss does not create an obligation to keep playing.
