Three casual food stops, chosen by the meal you want
For tacos, start with Tacos El Gordo’s Las Vegas Boulevard branch; for barbecue, compare Rollin Smoke on Highland Drive; for Korean-Mexican dishes, look at KoMex on Decatur. Here, “hole-in-the-wall” means an informal food stop. It is not a claim that a restaurant is undiscovered, locally preferred or guaranteed cheap.
Choose a specific dish and branch, then compare the outing cost. This shortlist focuses on casual meals; our Capo’s, Lotus of Siam and Raku comparison covers a different kind of dinner, and our broader off-Strip dining guide offers more neighborhood choices.
Tacos El Gordo: north-Strip tacos
The operator lists 3041 S Las Vegas Boulevard for this branch. Its published hours are Sunday–Thursday 10 AM–2 AM and Friday–Saturday 10 AM–4 AM. That makes it a possible late meal when you are already near this part of the Strip; it is not an off-Strip secret. Check holiday hours and the menu before heading over.
Use the official branch list and menu links to select the Las Vegas Boulevard location, rather than navigating to Sunset Road or North Las Vegas by mistake. The same list marks the Charleston Boulevard branch closed. For a more detailed taco-location comparison, see our Tacos El Gordo guide. A chain’s reputation is not a promise about today’s queue, seating or payment options.
Rollin Smoke: a barbecue meal on Highland Drive
The Highland Drive restaurant lists 3185 S Highland Drive, open daily 11 AM–9 PM, with a request to call about holidays. Confirm this branch when ordering or arranging a ride; its menu differs from other locations.
The published Highland menu lists a chopped-brisket sandwich at $13, a burnt-ends sandwich at $16, and an $8 addition to make a sandwich a combo with a side and drink. Two $13 sandwiches made into combos therefore total $42 before any applicable tax, tip or extra items. Check the ordering total for the exact day; the menu amounts are not a complete outing price.
KoMex: Korean-Mexican dishes on Decatur
KoMex Fusion lists 633 N Decatur Boulevard, Suite H, Monday–Saturday 11 AM–8 PM, last seating 7:30 PM, closed Sunday and some holidays. Do not put a Sunday visit into your itinerary without an announced exception.
Its menu includes fusion tacos, burritos, cheesesteaks, fries and other dishes built around Korean bulgogi. The menu also describes tofu or stir-fried vegetable substitutions for fusion dishes. If you have dietary restrictions, ask about the exact preparation, sauces and shared equipment rather than assuming a substitution settles every requirement. Check the current order price; this guide does not attach an old review’s price to today’s meal.
Will leaving the Strip save money?
Use the whole outing. As a hypothetical comparison, two $18 meals plus a $40 round-trip ride total $76 before meal tax, drinks or tips. Two $30 meals within walking distance total $60 before those extras. The trip with cheaper food costs $16 more under those assumptions. Replace the meal and ride figures with live quotes and compare the same inclusions. Our dinner-for-two budget guide helps account for tax and tipping.
Going for a particular dish can still be worthwhile. Combine a restaurant with something else you already want to do nearby, rather than treating the drive as a guaranteed saving. Verify the actual walking route, pickup point and return arrangement; a short straight-line map distance does not establish an easy walk.
Before you leave the hotel
- Confirm the address, day, last seating and holiday schedule on the restaurant’s own site.
- Check the current menu and how many items make a meal for your party.
- Ask about payment, dietary needs and whether you should order ahead; casual decor does not establish any of those policies.
- Check transport costs both ways. If your evening is Downtown instead, compare our Downtown food-after-2-AM options before crossing the city for a late meal.
