Why Entertainers Choose Las Vegas: Work, Family and Home Life

Work opportunities and home life are separate reasons to choose Las Vegas

Some entertainers describe family, community or work as reasons Las Vegas suits them. A recurring performance engagement can also place work in one venue for a period of time. Those are distinct choices: a show residency does not establish where the performer permanently lives.

The useful evidence comes from the individual’s own public account and dated work announcements. There is no basis here for a claim that all celebrities move for the same reason, receive the same tax saving or find guaranteed anonymity.

A documented example: Mark Wahlberg’s 2024 account

At IndyFest on October 17, 2024, Mark Wahlberg discussed his move in a public conversation with Nevada Independent editor Jon Ralston. The publication’s report of that discussion describes his and his wife’s decision about raising their children, their participation in church and community, and his positive experience of everyday interactions.

He also discussed local film talent and his ambition to expand Nevada’s film industry. This is evidence of what Wahlberg said at that time. It is not proof that every entertainer shares those priorities, that a proposed studio or tax-credit measure is operating now, or that a particular neighborhood guarantees privacy.

A show residency provides a work base, not a resident directory

In entertainment, a residency generally means a series of performances associated with a venue. It can provide an alternative to moving a production between cities for each engagement. That practical difference helps explain the appeal of a fixed venue, while each artist’s travel and home arrangements remain individual.

For example, O’s operator page places the production at Bellagio and publishes performance and dark dates. The venue listing establishes where the show happens; it does not establish the home address or permanent residence of any cast member.

Family support and the demands of work also vary. In a May 4, 2019 Vogue interview about the end of her Las Vegas engagement and the next phase of her career, Céline Dion described the substantial help she had at home and at work. That dated account illustrates how personal arrangements matter; it is not a current performance announcement or a claim about her present residence.

Separate the tax fact from assumptions about motivation

The Nevada Department of Taxation states that Nevada has no individual state income tax. Its explanation also identifies other taxes, including sales and property taxes.

That fact alone does not calculate an entertainer’s total tax bill or show why they moved. Work in other places, federal obligations and individual circumstances require separate consideration. A stage residency is not a legal residency determination, and a news account is not someone’s financial record. The claim that a particular person saves millions would require their actual relevant circumstances and a supported calculation.

Residential life and a resort visit involve different decisions

Choosing a home involves the property, recurring costs, household needs, schools or other services, and daily journeys. A visitor’s hotel rate, restaurant bill or quiet afternoon does not measure that whole choice. Compare like-for-like costs rather than assuming Las Vegas is always cheaper than every coastal city.

Likewise, someone describing a comfortable community does not establish universal school quality, safety or privacy. Use the person’s account for their own experience and current local sources for a separate relocation decision.

For visitors, plan around public appearances

If you want to see an entertainer, use the artist’s or venue’s current public schedule. Check the actual date, theater, admission rules and ticket terms; a past residency or an old celebrity sighting does not promise an appearance during your trip. Our show-booking guide covers performance dates and arrival planning.

For a look beyond resort showrooms, choose public places that interest you in their own right: Arts District galleries and shops or off-Strip restaurants, for example. Residential neighborhoods and private homes should not be treated as celebrity attractions. For an extended working visit, our remote-work guide compares actual workspaces and hotel arrangements.
