Budget tips by the service, then check what the bill already includes
Las Vegas visitors may meet restaurant servers, bartenders, bell staff, valets and dealers during the same day. That creates several tipping decisions; it does not establish a special citywide requirement to pay a higher percentage or buy preferential treatment.
The Las Vegas tourism authority’s travel information describes 15–20% as customary when food or drink is served. Treat that as guidance for a voluntary gratuity, and read the bill before adding anything. A required service charge or automatically added gratuity is a separate issue from the extra amount you choose.
Useful starting points for common services
| Service | Guidance or planning choice | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Served restaurant meal or bar tab | Tourism-authority guidance: 15–20%. | Whether gratuity is already included and which subtotal you are using. |
| Buffet | Allow for the service you receive and the venue’s bill. | Included gratuity, drinks and any service charge; no universal per-person cash minimum is assumed. |
| Bell staff | AAA’s current hotel guide suggests $1–$5 per bag. | The number of bags and separate handling occasions. |
| Valet | AAA’s FAQ gives $2–$5 when the car is returned. | The parking charge is a different cost; check the property’s arrangements. |
| Housekeeping | AAA cites a suggested baseline of at least $5 per night. | Service arrangements, any included gratuity and how to identify the payment for staff. |
| Casino beverage service | Choose an amount you can afford; $2 per served drink is used only in the budget example below. | A complimentary drink does not promise further drinks, faster service or a gambling benefit. |
AAA’s July 23, 2026 hotel-tipping guide also discusses daily housekeeping tips, rotating staff and cashless options. These are suggested amounts rather than mandatory hotel fees. Ask the hotel about an official digital option if you do not have cash.
Separate a voluntary tip from a service charge
The IRS explanation of tips and service charges distinguishes a customer-controlled tip from an imposed charge, including an automatic large-party gratuity. An employer may distribute or retain service-charge revenue; the label alone does not establish how an individual worker is paid.
Read each line before using a payment screen. If a receipt lists a service charge, automatic gratuity, delivery fee or another addition, ask what it covers and whether a gratuity is included. Decide any further voluntary amount after that explanation. Do not assume every added charge goes entirely to the server or automatically add the same percentage twice.
Example: on a $100 food-and-drink subtotal, a chosen 20% tip is $20. With an assumed $8.38 tax, the total is $128.38. The tax is an illustrative amount, not a universal rate. Our dinner-for-two guide covers fuller meal-budget examples.
Plan the smaller tips across the whole stay
Illustrative three-night cash allowance: $5 per night for housekeeping is $15; two luggage-handling occasions for two bags at $2 per bag total $8; two valet returns at $5 total $10; and four beverage-service tips at $2 total $8. Together that is $41, separate from meal tips already included in your dining budget.
Use only the services you actually choose. Change the allowance if you self-park, do not use luggage assistance or choose different amounts. Keep hotel fees and temporary card holds in separate budget categories; neither automatically describes a staff gratuity.
Tips do not guarantee upgrades, entry or gambling results
Ask about a room upgrade, faster service or an arrival arrangement through the hotel’s stated process, including any actual charge. A voluntary tip is not proof of an entitlement. At clubs, confirm admission and table terms through the venue; our nightclub music and booking guide explains the difference between a ticket, a guest list and a table purchase.
If tipping a dealer, ask how to hand over a cash tip or designate a dealer wager. A wager can lose, so it is different from a direct gratuity. Our dealer-tipping guide explains the distinction and examples. A tip changes neither the game’s rules nor its odds.
For a posed photograph, tour or other personal service, agree any price or expected payment before accepting it. If a charge or service issue is unclear, ask staff or a manager for an explanation.
