Las Vegas Hotel Fees: Resort Charges, Deposits and Holds

Separate the price you pay from the funds temporarily held

Compare the final accommodation price, then identify selected extras and any temporary card authorization. A mandatory resort fee, a room-booking deposit and an incidental hold are different things. Do not add an already-included fee twice or count an unused hold as a final trip expense.

The FTC’s lodging-fee guidance requires known mandatory fees in the upfront total. Government taxes and optional extras may initially be excluded, but the final payment amount must be disclosed before payment is requested. This regulates price presentation; it does not abolish resort fees.

What each line on the reservation means

ItemHow to treat itWhat to check
Room and mandatory feesPart of the accommodation price.Whether the displayed stay total already includes every required fee.
TaxesPart of the final charge. The amount shown for that property and reservation; no universal Vegas percentage is assumed.
Optional extrasAdd the items you actually select or use.Parking, a pet, premium internet, minibar items or a confirmed early/late room arrangement.
Booking depositA payment toward the reservation, subject to its terms. How it is credited to the balance and whether cancellation permits a refund.
Incidental authorizationTemporary use of card capacity or available funds, with actual charges settled separately. The amount, per-night or per-stay basis, cap and release timing.

Resort fees vary by property and offer

If the hotel is part of a larger purchase, compare complete Las Vegas vacation packages with separate flight and room bookings. Include each required charge once, value credits only for planned eligible spending, and check the cancellation terms for every component before deciding which suitable trip costs less.

When choosing where to reserve, compare direct hotel offers, other booking channels and usable benefits. Keep the room, final charges and cancellation conditions equivalent before valuing a credit or loyalty benefit.

For an exemption, check documented resort-fee waiver eligibility and no-fee alternatives. Confirm the booking channel, status at the stay and exact reservation. A quoted total that already includes a fee is different from a waiver.

For a loyalty-based offer, evaluate whether joining a players club provides usable value for your plans. Membership alone does not establish a fee waiver, and spending extra to obtain a benefit can exceed the saving.

For a practical room shortlist, compare the budget Strip hotel rooms and complete stay costs. Judge the actual room, required charges and planned transport together rather than choosing solely by a lower nightly headline.

Four Queens advertises no resort fee. The Plaza’s general-reservation FAQ lists $39 per night plus tax, and included parking for standard-size vehicles. For three nights, that published fee alone is $117 before tax, not the room total. Check your actual offer for any exception and do not add the fee again if it is already included.

A mandatory charge does not become optional just because you do not use an included amenity. Confirm any waiver, eligible loyalty benefit or offer condition in writing. Our no-resort-fee hotel guide compares the policy with the complete stay cost.

A deposit can mean a payment or an authorization

Before choosing a refundable room offer, use the flexible hotel-rate and rebooking guide to compare cancellation deadlines, penalties and deposits. A flexible cancellation condition does not guarantee that an authorization or refund releases immediately.

MGM’s general reservation FAQ describes a first-night room-and-tax booking deposit. Its refundability depends on the reservation’s cancellation conditions. That payment should be accounted for when checking the remaining balance.

For incidentals, New York-New York’s FAQ lists $75 per day, capped at $300. It says that if no incidental charges remain on the final bill, the deposit is released to the card; the institution can take 7–10 business days, or up to 30 business days for international institutions. Three days at the listed daily amount would be $225, below the cap. Other hotels and payment methods can have different arrangements.

Plaza separately describes a $100 incidental deposit per reservation. A per-stay amount and a per-day amount are different. Before travel, ask the hotel what it will authorize, how prepayments affect the balance and what available funds or credit you need.

A simple expense-versus-hold example

Suppose a three-night accommodation checkout total is $510, already including mandatory fees and tax, and you use $60 of parking. Your final expense is $570. If the hotel temporarily authorizes all $570 alongside a separate unused $100 incidental hold, $670 of capacity is tied up at that point.

When the unused $100 is released, it does not turn the trip into a $670 expense. The final cost remains $570 in this example. Do not subtract a booking prepayment twice, either. These are hypothetical teaching amounts, not an authorization quote for a named hotel.

Confirm optional charges before agreeing to them

If fitness facilities matter to your booking, use the hotel-gym hours, access and cost guide to check the facility you intend to use. Confirm its access conditions against the benefits and charges on your own reservation.

  • Early arrival or late departure: ask about room availability and the actual fee before accepting; a room category or polite request does not guarantee a free extension.
  • Parking: check self-parking versus valet, overnight duration, eligibility and whether parking is already part of the stay price. Compare the journeys in our car versus rideshare guide.
  • Pets and room extras: confirm the exact pet policy, personal-use fridge availability, premium internet and any ordered amenities. Do not move minibar items into your own storage without checking the hotel’s charging policy.
  • Staff gratuities: read any included charge rather than assuming a resort fee is a tip. Our tipping guide explains the distinction.

Save the booking summary and compare it with the itemized checkout bill. Ask the hotel to explain an unexpected line and keep the response.
